So, here is the best I could figure as to how this situation came about:
Armin had fallen asleep sitting on the floor, leaning against the shelf. Judging from the book abandoned on the floor nearby, Eren guessed he had been reading. Well, it made sense. Armin had been working hard. Eren was tired too after a day of submitting himself to Hanji's experiments with his titan form. He leaned against the shelf to rest for a second.
The next thing he knew, he found himself on a giant slab of wood. After a moment he recognized it as the shelf he had been leaning on. He couldn't quite believe it, but all evidence pointed to the fact that he'd suddenly shrunk. Well, if he could grow to enormous size as a titan, there might be a way to shrink as well. Perhaps it was some side effect of the experiments they'd done today.
Peering over the edge of the shelf he saw Armin. If he could attract the other boy's attention, he could get Hanji and maybe they could figure out what had happened and how to reverse it. He called Armin's name, but there was no response. His voice must be tiny to match his size. He ran across the shelf to get closer to Armin and tried again. Still nothing.
He leaned over the edge to get as close as possible, but just as he was about to yell at the top of his lungs, Armin stirred. Perhaps his earlier calls had woken him up after all--but he didn't seem to have actually heard Eren. Yawning wide, he stretched out his arms and bumped the shelf. Eren wasn't prepared for the immensity of what would normally have been just the slightest wobble from his usual perspective. He lost his balance and fell off the shelf, dropping toward Armin's open mouth...
